It has been 10 long years since the previous racquetball championship took place in Miami marking this great city’s longest drought without hosting a major indoor tournament. That is until now. Founder and creator of Xelani, Alex Zamudio, explains the concept behind the creation of Xelani is with the sole intention to put Miami back on the forefront as the premier location and international hub of the sport. Racquetball continues to grow at a rapid rate outside of the United States yet the vast majority of international competition is held in the States. “The University of Miami has been a strategic partner and imperative for the success of this mission,” says Zamudio. “The Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center is a state-of-the-art facility with beautiful racquetball courts and is compared by none other in the entire state.” The Xelani Open is an international racquetball championship where the best players from multiple corners of the world will congregate for this first-of-its-kind tournament. Amateur players will compete for the largest prize purse values in the sport.
Xelani will award beyond the customary first place and second place finishers by allowing players to cash-in all the way to the top eight that reached the quarterfinals. All of this is unprecedented in the sport for amateur competition. Zamudio is confident that the Xelani Open will give the racquetball community as a whole the spark that it needs and deserves. The Xelani Open begins February 25. This event will mark the beginning of many more great things to come for the sport, especially here in Miami.
Xelani can be reached via email info@xelani.com or visit their website xelanisports.com for more event specific details and official tournament information. Tournament entry deadline is set for February 15.
